Recordings of the music of Giovanni Sgambati (1841-1914) have largely been confined to orchestral and piano works. + This set reveals Sgambati as an accomplished chamber musician working within the German tradition he tried hard to introduce to Italian concert societies as one of the few 19th c. Italian musicians operating outside Italy’s native operatic tradition. + The early first string quartet (1864) and piano quintets (1866) are in the Mendelssohn-Schumann mold. + The second string quartet (1882) and piano quintet (1876) are more chromatically developed, embracing some of Wagner’s idiom.
