The first-ever Soviet music tournament instantly became one of the world’s most prestigious competitions. Emil Gilels chaired by the piano jury for many years, while David Oistrakh and Mstislav Rostropovich headed the violin and cello juries, respectively. Alexander Sveshnikov, an outstanding choirmaster and Moscow Conservatory chancellor was a chairman of the vocal jury. For the fifty years of its existence, the Tchaikovsky Competition discovered numerous distinguished performers including Van Cliburn, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Grigory Sokolov, John Lill, Mikhail Pletnev, Gidon Kremer, Vladimir Spivakov, Oleg Kagan, Yevgeny Nesterenko, Natalia Gutman and Elena Obraztsova, to name but a few. The recordings, including a number never-before-released, were made immediately during the competition auditions and at the prizewinners’ recitals. The release is dedicated to the recognition of the 175th anniversary of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s birth. Price: $129.98 |
