Fuchs: Piano Trio, Violin Sonata, Etc

The almost unknown, lovely, unfailingly melodious chamber music of Robert Fuchs (1847‐1927) – close friend of Brahms, Vienna Conservatory Director – reflects the musical atmosphere of late 19th c. Vienna. • He was of a late generation, however, and his music moves forward into the 20th c. not with bold Second Viennese School iconoclasm but the urgent post‐Romanticism of Korngold and Goldmark. • Op.103 (1915) is the last of his six violin sonatas; the Trio, op. 115 (1921) shows certain Mahler-like tendencies. The resigned 6 Phantasiestücke op.117 (1927) for viola and piano are Fuchs’s last works.
