Joseph Haydn: Missa in Augustiis
In this 2009 Haydn Anniversary Year, many new recordings of Haydn works have been produced, but in the realm of Haydn Choral works, this 1987 recording of the Nelson Mass still stands strong. Trevor Pinnock, a consumate pro when it comes to Baroque and Classical Choral standards, esembled a wonderful mix of soloists to go with the English Concert. Felicity Lott sings wonderfully fluid coloratura lines as the featured soloist in the Nelson Mass. The other Soloists are top notch, especially David Wilson-Johnson, whose full rich voice is the perfect fit for the 'Qui tollis Pecata mundi' solo in the Gloria movement. The Te Deum that follows is a lively upbeat work, and shows off the choir. This recording has set the bar for Nelson Mass recordings, and it will not soon be surpassed. Five Stars!
