Melodiya continues its series of Nikolai Medtner’s own recordings, as a group some of the most valuable gems from its archives. Born to a family of German descent who settled in Russia long before his birth, even after three decades of emigration he remained an essentially Russian musician till his death. The anthology’s second volume includes his three piano concertos recorded in the 1940’s in London (the second and third conducted by Issay Dobrowen, another renowned Russian musical émigré). The set also features one of the most original of the composer’s works – Sonata-Ballade, op. 27.
