Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir, Ton Koopman

Composed by: BUXTEHUDE

This 29-CD set and DVD is the first in recorded history to present the complete works of the great early baroque composer Dieterich Buxtehude. It is the culmination of a remarkable series of recordings made since 2006 by the early music specialist and President of the International Buxtehude Society Ton Koopman, along with his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir. The last volume of the edition, Opera Omnia XX – Vocal Works 10, is also being released simultaneously as a separate issue (CC72259). At the same time Challenge Classics are also reissuing Koopman’s outstanding series of recordings of the complete recordings of the cantatas of J.S. Bach (CC72350) at a specially-reduced price. These recordings are all released to celebrate Koopman’s 70th birthday. After completing his critically-acclaimed edition of recordings of all of J.S. Bach’s Cantatas in 2006, Ton Koopman’s endless curiosity in music and performance led him to undertake the task of being the first to record all of the works of the great German Baroque composer Dieterich Buxtehude. This ground-breaking box set, which includes 29 CDs and a DVD, is the result of this amazing undertaking. Ton Koopman celebrated his 70h birthday on 2nd October 2014, and earlier in 2014 he was presented with the prestigious Bach Prize by London’s Royal Academy of Music, for his “remarkable work promoting Bach’s music in the last thirty or so years”. Dieterich Buxtehude is considered to be the most prominent figure of the German Baroque music before Johann Sebastian Bach and the famous anecdote of the 20 year old J.S. Bach walking 400 kilometres to listen to Buxtehude playing in Lübeck in 1705 gives an immediate idea of the importance of his work. Buxtehude’s Opera Omnia consists of a large body of compositions including vocal works (cantatas, concertos and arias), organ works, which are performed by Ton Koopman on historical instruments, and chamber music (sonatas and trio sonatas).
