Label: MELODIYA Catalog: MELCD1002269 Format: CD Tatiana NikolayevaComposed by: Shostakovich, Dmitry Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-75) came up with the idea of a polyphonic piano cycle in 1950 after taking part in bicentenary events commemorating Bach’s death in Leipzig. As a jury member of the International Piano Competition for best performance of Bach’s music, Shostakovich witnessed the unconditional first-prize triumph of young Soviet pianist Tatiana Nikolayeva. Upon completing his new opus in 1951, Shostakovich dedicated it to Nikolayeva who premiered it in Leningrad in 1952. Ms. Nikolayeva’s interpretation, heard here in a 1987 recording, is still considered the model. Price: $57.98 |
