Composed by: Kodaly, Zoltan

Bicinia Hungarica (1937-42) is an encyclopaedic work: it is a microcosm of Kodály’s musical aims distilled into the frame of two-part compositions. Its musical materials consist of arrangements of the composer’s own melodies, many Hungarian, some Finnish and, in Volume 4, many Mari (Cheremis) folk tunes. Volume 3 takes us closer to older musical traditions through arrangements of historical and religious songs. The model for the composer was a 16th c. collection, published by Georgius Rhauus in 1545, entitled Bicinia Gallica, Latina et Germanica. Kodály’s Tricinia (1954) is seemingly a collection of stylistic exercises in which pieces use elements and compositional techniques from Renaissance and Baroque polyphony as far as late-Romantic chromaticism, exotic colors and impressionistic features. All of these elements appear filtered through Kodály’s personality, and with poetic expression. Complete on three CDs.
