Satie 1912 -1915 Orchestrated / Decoust
Label: SKARBO Catalog: DSK3135 Format: CD Erik Satie’s piano pieces are very often like sketches; the indications on the scores, the subjects and the titles seem to suggest development or amplification of the ideas as well as the sound. These reasons led French composer Michel Decoust to orchestrate the most famous satiric and humorous Satie pieces of the 1912-15 period, as Maurice Ravel so brilliantly did with Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. These transcriptions mark these work’s first appearances in orchestral guise. The variety of timbres, the intimacy and the minimalism inherent in the aesthetic of the music led to Mr. Decoust’s decision to utilize a small orchestra. Michel Decoust’s (b. 1936) fifty-plus year career includes, besides his considerable and stylistically varied compositional output, assisting in the founding of an orchestra, co-founding a conservatory, directing the teaching department at IRCAM at Pierre Boulez’s invitation and working within France’s Ministry of Culture.
