This well-regarded 1958 Bayreuth production of Lohengrin finds one of the finest mid-20th century dramatic tenors, the Hungarian tenor Sándor Kónya (1923-2002) in the title role. This performance marked his first Bayreuth Lohengrin. The rest of cast, including Leonie Rysanek and Astid Varnay, all under the direction of the noted Wagnerian, French conductor André Cluytens, is equally assured and much admired.
