This recording is one the finest jazz vocal albums out there. Unpretentious, genuine, and with top-shelf performances all around. This would be Coltrane's only recording as a leader with a vocalist. Hartman did not consider himself a jazz singer, but this session proved otherwise.
Hartman's smooth baritone voice soars at times and reaches to the depths at others with nary a forced note to be heard. Coltrane provides note-perfect accompaniment behind the singer while keeping his solos short, to-the-point, and never far from the melody. The rest of the group follows suit and gives their all underneath the two frontmen.
This CD is a must-have for any who even remotely enjoys jazz!
