Johann Casper Kerll (1627-1693)
Missa

The Bohemian Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704), one of the greatest violinists of his time, also composed phenomenal vocal-instrumental church music when he was Kapellmeister at the Salzburg court. His collection "Vesperae longiores ac breviores unacùm litaniis Lauretanis" published in 1693, is an eloquent testimony to this. Konrad Junghänel has selected five Psalm settings and a Magnificat from it, combining these with sacred concertos of Johann Caspar Kerll to form a magnificent "Vesper of St. Mary". The conception of Mary as a heavenly mother, sister and advocate for all believers lends a virtually hymn-like expression to the liturgical music of the "Vesper of St. Mary".
The programme of this recording is rounded off by Johann Caspar Kerll's (1627-1693) "Missa in fletu solationum obsidionis Viennensis". This Mass, written in Vienna under the impact of the Turkish occupation, famine and plague epidemics is dedicated to the people "to comfort them in their lamentation". This lamentation is manifest in incredibly eccentric chromatic melodic progressions and in occasionally abrupt major-minor alternations (both in the vocal and instrumental parts) that reveal Kerll to be an extraordinary composer.
The eight-part vocal ensemble Cantus Cölln together with the wind formation "Concerto Palatino", which includes zinks and baroque trombones, create the splendid sound heard on this recording.
