In Italy, during the era that saw the birth and establishing of opera, "canto da camara" accompanied by basso continuo, represented the most refined and innovative aspect of vocal art. Lyricism, theatricality and experimentation co-exist in a musical miniature often worked with great creativity. The vocal works presented on this disc respond, onthe whole, to the panorama of novelties we have sketched, although, if we take into account that the oldest of them were published in 1623 and 1624, we must conclude that they all correspond to a period in which the experimentation phase had finished and accompanied monody was perfectly accepted in the mind of all Italian composers of the time.
