It all began in 1976, when the countertenor René Jacobs recorded his first recording for harmonia mundi in St. Michel de Provence, Marc-Antoine Charpentiers Leçons des Ténèbres. The young artist already showed an unusual competence at that time and distinguished himself especially by the fact that he was more interested in remaining true to the spirit of the work than in what was called "authentic sound" at that time. Jacobs never deviated from this attitude, neither in his career as a singer nor in his conquest of the opera world. First came the masters of Venetian opera - Cestis Orontea and Cavalli with his Xerse, the Giasone and the unforgettable performance of Calisto, which is now finally available on DVD. But first and foremost is Claudio Monteverdi, this "titan of music", who always reminds the musicians that they owe awe first and foremost to the drama itself. harmonia mundi celebrates the thirtieth anniversary of its collaboration with a double CD plus DVD, for which René Jacobs himself compiled the programme from his recordings of the last 30 years.
