Born in Minsk, Ekaterina Semenchuk studied at the Minsk Music School, the Byelorussian Music Academy, and the Mariinsky Theatre’s Academy for Young Singers. She went on to win two prizes at the Dvořák Competition (opera and song), achieved similar success at the International Obraztsova Competition (the Hope award and the prize for the best performance of works by contemporary Russian composers), and was a finalist in the Plácido Domingo Operalia and Cardiff Singer of the World Competitions. Her operatic roles so far include Preziosilla and Curra in La forza del destino, Pauline in Pique Dame at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, Carmen at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, with the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Dallas Opera (Myung-Whun Chung) and in Warsaw (with Jose Cura), Marina in Boris Godunov, and Olga in Eugene Onegin at Aix-en-Provence (Daniel Harding), the Théâtre du Châtelet (Valery Gergiev) and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. She has sung the mezzo-soprano part in Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra under Carlo Rizzi. She gave her debut recital at the Wigmore Hall, and toured North America in recital with her accompanist, Larissa Gergieva, before returning to the major venues in Europe (Lisbon, Berlin, Brussels, London and Paris). Ekaterina Semenchuk will shortly be appearing again in several of her existing roles at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich (Pique Dame) and the Royal Opera House in London (Eugene Onegin), and will also sing Sonya in War and Peace at the Metropolitan Opera.
