19th century Italian opera inspired any number of adaptations, arrangements and other kinds of 'paraphrases' (to use the contemporary term). At a time when the gramophone was not yet in existence, it was thanks to the arrangements, written for instruments commonly found in the home, that the ordinary music lover could enjoy the works they had heard on stage. On this disc, clarinetist Alessandro Carbonare pays tribute to such forgotten craftsmen as Bassi, G. Salieri and Carlo della Giacoma. It is thanks to these arrangers that the sparkling paraphrases heard here brightened the homes of countless music lovers of the time.
