Das Alt-Bachische Archiv Cantus Cölln, Concerto Palatino, Konrad Junghänel

Hardly a single work by Johann Sebastian Bach's ancestors would have been handed down to us had he not himself faithfully archived the compositions of the century-old Thuringian church musician dynasty. And even his son Carl Philipp Emmanuel, himself a composer of European standing, recalled his father's performance of a piece by Johann Christoph Bach (1642-1703): "My blessed father once performed it in church in Leipzig, all amazed at the effect." This "Old Bach Archive", created by Johann Sebastian, came into the possession of the Berlin Sing-Akademie; after the end of the Second World War it was lost for fifty years and was only recently rediscovered in the State Archives of the Ukraine; it has since been returned to Berlin. Konrad Junghänel and his ensemble Cantus Cölln are truly appointed interpreters of this music: proven specialists in 17th century music, Junghänel and Cantus Cölln have also rendered outstanding services to the music of the Thomaskantor Reviews "Listening to the 24 compositions in all, which find a place here on two CDs in a musically and thematically appealing sequence, one can admire the music itself and its splendid execution in equal measure."
