The work feels much less liturgical than others of its genre, though it is still an uplifting expression of faith. Despite the fact that the work was written as a Requiem for England, Dvoraks national feeling can still be easily heard, especially in the opening of the fugue which relates to a Czech hymn from the Gothic period.
