As a conductor, Joseph Keilberth belonged to the "old school," which distinguished itself from younger generations by focusing on climbing the career ladder in the same opera house. His friendship with Hans Pfitzner significantly affected his vision of interpretation, which was devoid of all theatrical effects. The sound he produced under his baton was brilliant but never storming or thundering, and he didn't let himself go to exaggerating details.
