Stone Records is delighted to announce the release of the first volume of the complete songs of Roger Quilter (1877-1953), performed by baritone Mark Stone and pianist Stephen Barlow.
Roger Quilter is one of the best-loved song composers of the twentieth century, and yet, until now, there was no complete edition of his songs. This is the first of four discs that will rectify this omission, with each release focusing on different poets: volume 1 features Quilter's settings of Shakespeare, Dowson and Stevenson.
This first disc was originally released by Sony, and has been rearranged, remastered, and redesigned, adding detailed notes and texts for each track.
Stone is critically acclaimed for his performances on stage and in concert and his forthcoming engagements include his debut at Hamburg Opera as well as return visits to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and The Opera Company of Philadelphia. In recital with Barlow, he has been described as "a baritone of extraordinary elegance and unforced expressiveness... versatile in his response to the varying stylistic demands" with Barlow "accompanying his voice with a genuine feeling for tone-colour and shape". This project is the result of a long period of research and preparation by both artists and will be cherished by lovers of Quilter's beautiful songs.
"Stephen Barlow's project to record all of Quilter's songs is a worthy one... this first instalment, sensitively sung by baritone Mark Stone with Barlow accompanying, is a promising start" The Guardian
"Stone's engagingly natural style and immaculate diction are supported by Barlow's sympathetic playing." Sunday Times
