The script of the ballet, staged by Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes, emerged as a result of collective efforts by choreographer Michel Fokine; scene-painters Alexandre Benois, Léon Bakst, and Dmitri Stelletsky; and literary men Alexei Remizov and Pyotr Potyomkin. After Diaghilev’s passing, Manuel de Falla wrote to Stravinsky: “Of all his remarkable deeds, his ‘discovery’ of you takes the first place.” |
