Spain Through Strings / Zemlinsky Qt.
Label: Harmonia Mundi Catalog: PRD 250295 Format: SACD Miriam Rodriguez Brüllová (guitar), Zemlinsky QuartetAyres The Zemlinsky Quartet presents Spain Through Strings - an original selection of Spanish and Spanish-inspired works for strings. The program begins on a more traditional note with the third String Quartet by short-lived genius Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga, nicknamed "The Spanish Mozart." The romantic Spanish flavor shifts into high gear with programmatic works for quartet by Turina and Toldrá including a perennial concert favorite, Turina's La Oración del Torero, best known in its later version for string orchestra. The collection concludes with a work by Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco featuring guitarist Miriam Rodriguez Brüllova, who joins the quartet for the composer's 1950 Guitar Quintet, written for the great Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia.
