Master of the King's Musick to Henri IV, Claude Le Jeune held strong Huguenot convictions and played a fundamental role in the composition of Protestant music; he was also acknowledged as a master of the Franco-Flemish tradition and greatly skilled in counterpoint and polyphony. The texts chosen for his chansons vary widely. A number are somewhat moralizing, while others feature mockery of the clergy, but there are also drinking songs and saucy pieces as Laute joun, whose Gascon patois conceals an anti-Catholic barb.
