Schumann: Missa Sacra Op.147, Vier dopperchörige Gesänge Op.141

Schumann's Missa Sacra was written in the composer's late period, during a period when he was particularly focused on writing religious music. Never performed before his death, the work came to light thanks to the insistence of Clara Schumann, who not only made sure it was published, but also submitted it (under a pseudonym) to a composing competition run by an English society in its later version for choir and organ. On this recording, Geoffroy Jourdain and his period instrument ensemble Les Cris de Paris make it clear why Clara Schumann felt this was a masterpiece. Jourdain pairs the mass with another late work, Schumann's splendid a capella choral cycle entitled Vier doppelchörige Gesänge.
