Haydn: Die Schopfung / Mehta
Label: Helicon Catalog: 02.9657 Format: CD Barbara Hendricks (soprano), Chris Merritt (tenor), José Van Dam (bass), Choeur de l'Orchestre de Paris, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Zubin MehtaComposed by: HAYDN, F.J. If one believes an anecdote from the early 1790s, it was with his oratorio Die Schöpfung (The Creation) that Haydn, in the autumn of his years, hoped to perpetuate his fame for posterity <0x2014> even though he was already the most celebrated composer in Europe. Not surprisingly, the work's first public performance in 1799 was a huge triumph. This glorious live recording from 1986 features Maestro Zubin Mehta leading the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in a decidedly old fashioned reading of this majestic score, eschewing the authentic performance practice approach in favor of a more romantic and lyrical sound. The Choeur de l'Orchestre de Paris is superb, and Mehta's three soloists <0x2014> soprano Barbara Hendricks, tenor Chris Merritt and bass José Van Dam <0x2014> are on peak form. Price: $41.98 |
