This disc, recorded live at the 2011 Festival, includes twelve première recordings of Wolf's settings of poems by Chamisso, Hebbel, Ibsen, Roquette, Rückert, Zschokke and Zusner. Over the course of the next two years, Oxford Lieder is continuing to promote a series of concerts encompassing every song by Hugo Wolf, all of which will be recorded and released on the Stone Records label, in a series of a dozen discs. This CD features a large number of songs that have as yet failed to be incorporated into the Hugo Wolf editions produced by other record labels, and each of them is an entertaining and enlightening example of the master song-composer's craft, complementing and shedding new light on his better-known repertoire. This revelatory disc is a must-have for all Lieder afi cionados and music lovers. The young singers on this disc are rapidly becoming known for their beautiful performances both on the opera stage and the concert platform and, together with the festival's artistic director at the piano, provide world-class interpretations of these rarely-heard songs. They were recorded in the Holywell Music Room, Europe's oldest purpose-built concert hall, by the multi-award-winning production team of Mark Brown and Julian Millard. In addition, the disc's booklet features translations and detailed notes by Richard Stokes, a leading authority on the interpretation of Lieder.
