This long-awaited live performance, from the Royal Festival Hall in October 1954, joins SOMM’s growing collection of unforgettable performances by a conductor who genuinely loved French music and programmed it regularly in his concerts. He first conducted the Symphony in the presence of the composer—whom he knew well and who was the soloist in a Mozart Piano Concerto—in an otherwise all-Saint-Saëns program. Sir Thomas never recorded the work commercially, and this live performance is very precious.
