Piano Concerto No.2, Ouverture de Frithiof, Dixtuor

Théodore Dubois (1837-1924) was an exceptionally gifted student at the Conservatoire de Paris, winning many awards, particularly in piano and composition, including the Grand Prix de Rome in 1861. He took a position as a tutor at the Conservatoire from 1871 and was appointed director in 1896 <0x2014> a position he held until his retirement in 1905. He combined these duties with various music-related positions in the Church, notably as organist of La Madeleine in Paris. As performed here by the ensemble Les Siècles under the direction of François-Xavier Roth, works as varied as Ouverture de Frithiof, the strikingly original Dixtuor for double quintet or the romantic Piano Concerto prove that, while he respected tradition, Dubois was also sensitive to modern developments. His inspirations ranged from Franck and Schumann to Brahms and Saint-Saëns.
