This live recording of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra features Mstislav Rostropovich conducting of two masterpieces by Tchaikovsky. The composer himself conducted the first performance of the Pathétique symphony in Saint Petersburg, just nine days prior to his death (or possible suicide). This musical 'swan song' has since become an integral part of the standard repertory. Tchaikovsky's symphonic poem Francesca da Rimini was composed in less than three weeks during a visit to Bayreuth in the autumn of 1876. In this fantasia, Tchaikovsky presents a symphonic interpretation of the tragic tale of Francesca, a beauty immortalized in Dante's Divine Comedy. It shows the influences of Liszt and even Wagner, whose operas Tchaikovsky had traveled to Bayreuth to hear. |
