Hagen: The Augsburg Manuscript - Music For Lute
Label: PANCLASSICS Catalog: PC10267 Format: CD Roberto Barto, luteBernhard Joachim Hagen: Sonata in F minor - Sonata in D major - Sonata in G minor - Sonata in B flat major - Sonata in C minor - Sonatina in F major All of Bernhard Joachim Hagen's known works are in a single large manuscript, found today in the City Library of Augsburg. Included are: 12 solo lute pieces; 6 trios for lute, violin and cello; one duo for two lutes or lute and violin; one duo for lute and violin; two lute concertos, as well as many arrangements of pieces of instrumental and vocal works by contemporaries including Geminiani, Locatelli, Giardino and Arne. Several Hagen solo works listed in the Breitkopf catalogue of 1769 are unfortunately now lost. Also included in the manuscript are two of Haydn's chamber pieces with lute, possibly arranged by Hagen. In him we find a worthy exponent of the lute in its last days. His music is full of surprises, at times moving, spirited, brilliant or humorous, and it is always elegant and expertly crafted. Although the occasional lute piece is still found in the beginning of the 19th century, Hagen's works are the last substantial contribution to the lute repertoire. He can truly be called the last great lute virtuoso. |
