Piatigorsky plays Mendelssohn, Chopin, Strauss

Recorded between 1966 and 1968, Gregor Piatigorsky (1903-1976) delivers firmly shaped readings of three cello sonatas, vividly transferred from original RCA Victor masters. Felix Mendelssohn had his brother Paul in mind for his Sonata No. 2, Op. 58, although he dedicated it to the Russian amateur player and music patron Prince Mateusz Wielhorski. Frederic Chopin composed the Sonata Op. 65 ñ his final large-scale creation ñ for the cello virtuoso Auguste Franchomme and the two gave its premiËre in 1847. Richard Strauss's Sonata Op. 6 is a youthful work, dating from 1883. The Czech cellist Hanu_ Wihan accepted Strauss's dedication and gave the first performance with the composer.
