Mikalojus Konstantinas ˇCiurlionis (1875–1911)—the father of Lithuanian professional music, a composer, artist, philosopher, and poet—embodied the idea of a synthesis of arts including music, painting, and poetry. His works have secured a special place not only in the history of Lithuania, but also in the global culture. Through his paintings he tried to express music with color, and as a gifted musician and painter, he felt the need to express himself in both creative spheres. In his bright yet short life ( ˇCiurlionis died at the age of 35), he created about 300 paintings and about 350 musical compositions, most of which were piano miniatures. He penned symphonic poems In the Forest(1901) and The Sea (1907); overture K˛estutis (1902), cantata for mixed choir and symphonic orchestra De Profundis (1899); and compositions for a capella choir to the texts of the psalms.
