British trombone player Dennis Rollins is a fixture in the UK jazz scene, having played with a variety of big name artists from many different genres (Brand New Heavies, Blur, Tom Jones) and having created his own unique funky jazz sound. THE 11TH GATE finds the artist sharing the stage with organ player Ross Stanley and drummer Pedro Segundo, creating a very distinctive blend of instruments that are not often paired in a small jazz setting. The music has a sense of groove, with Rollins' trombone swooping around the bubbly tones of the organ, while Segundo provides a peppy, Latin-tinged percussion backdrop. There is a laid-back harmonic undercurrent in the music, which provides a nice juxtaposition with the dynamic, attention-grabbing nature of the trombone. Highlights like "Samba Galactica" and 'Lightbringer" show a trio on top of their game, bringing the funk while keeping things smooth.
