BIS followers with a good memory may remember the name Chen Yi from Oriental Landscapes (CD1222), released last year with Evelyn Glennie and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Chen Yi's percussion concerto was one of the main works on that disc, and has received much attention. (It will be performed during the BBC Proms this year). In that work, as in the ones on the present disc, the composer makes use of her Chinese heritage, and her experiences as a performer in the Beijing Opera tradition. These influences she skilfully weaves together with the Western music which she was trained in, and continued to practice even during the Cultural Revolution. Presenting these exciting works are Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Lan Shui, well-known to BIS followers. New to BIS is virtuoso violinist Cho-Liang Lin, soloist in Chinese Folk Dance Suite and Romance and Dance for two violins and string orchestra.
