C.p.e. Bach & Abel: Sonatas For Viola Da Gamba
Label: Pan classics Catalog: PC10252 Format: CD Rebeka Rusó (viola da gamba); Sebastian Wienand (fortepiano)Carl Philip Emanuel Bach (1714-1788): Sonatas WQ 88, 136 & 137 The character of this CD is determined by its programme which unites the composers Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) and Carl Friedrich Abel (1723-1787) and by the distinctive tonal quality evoked by combining the viola da gamba and the fortepiano. The "London" Abel and the "Berlin" Bach marked the last flowering period of the viola da gamba. While Bach's style might be described with the German expressions "Empfindsamkeit" ("sensitivity") and "Sturm und Drang", Abel's compositional style was closer to the category of "Pre-Classicism". Bach's music is characterised by its discontinuous and tormented flow, swift changes of "affect" and surprising harmonics. By contrast, Abel's music strikes one as being clearer, more homogeneous and logical, even blessed with a singing, often lyrical quality of inflected elegance. Price: $27.98 |
