Marc Copland/john Abercrombie: Speak To Me
Label: PIROUET Catalog: PIT3058 Format: CD Marc Copland, piano; John Abercrombie, guitarLeft Behind / Speak to Me / Seven / If I Should Lose You / Blues Connotation / So Long / Falling Again / Talkin' Blues / Witchcraft Something that lasts so long is seldom as good as what is on this CD. It is appropriately called "Speak to Me", and is the first recording of a duo that has actually been around for a long time. The recording, featuring pianist Marc Copland and guitarist John Abercrombie, is a perfect example of the quiet, composed art of communication performed at the highest level. Copland and Abercrombie have been playing together since the beginning of the 1970's. Copland originally was a saxophonist but switched to piano. The two have been playing concerts in duo since the late 1980's; their playing has been celebrated by the likes of the Washington Post, which called the duo "elegant and earthy at the same time." One can experience more facets of this great jazz guitarist and the pianist known for his distinctive style by listening to the nine pieces here. Copland and Abercrombie face each other with sublime calm. Like two close friends conversing, they immediately get to the root of the matter without resorting to any rhetoric extravagance. The music grows out of these roots with a sense of relaxed beauty and can be compared with the finest chamber music. The pieces shimmer with many shades and meanings. They are small sculptures of artful transience. Even with such a well-known piece as standard so often associated with Sinatra, "Witchcraft", the listener experiences something new: an unusually consequent intense atmosphere. This is music from two of the most insightful players in jazz. Price: $24.98 |
