Heinrich Schütz
Madrigaux Italiens SWV 1-19

The nineteen madrigals Heinrich Schütz published in Venice in 1611 at the age of twenty-six occupy a fundamental position in his career as well as in the history of music. For it was in Italy that the father of German baroque music learned his craft under the living god of Venetian polyphony, Giovanni Gabrieli. Not only did the pupil end up by excelling the master, but these Italian madrigals also formed the solid foundation of all sacred music of the future, since they possessed in embryo all the qualities of the composer's creative genius.
