Following the world-premiere releases of Golem and Arald and Luceafarul (The Evening Star), Nimbus presents Nicolae Bretan's magnum opus. Dismissed from the Romanian Composers' Union in 1948 and officially silenced by the communist regime until his death two decades later, Bretan has been rescued from the darkness, and his music is heard once more. This three-act work tells the story of Romanian folk-hero Horia, who leads a peasant revolt against his country's overlords. The work premiered in 1937 and was immediately embraced as Romania's national opera. The opera includes a 208-page complete libretto in Romanian, English, French and German, along with color production photos and an appreciation of the opera. The master tapes used for this release were recorded surreptitiously and spirited out of Romania covertly: although the sound is monaural, it is our only surviving record of this significant work.
